Anthony’s inside story of what the Pub & Bar Careers programme is all about…

Pub & Bar Careers

Anthony Pender, vice-chairman of the Perceptions Group and managing director of The Yummy Pub Company, launched the learning programme in one of his Yummy Pubs; The Somers Town Coffee House, to help unemployed young people from the surrounding neighbourhood into work.

His mission; to get hard working, ambitious and motivated unemployed people and give them a kick-start into the hospitality sector…

Anthony’s grand plan to open the pub and bar career door to young people has now been backed by the Perceptions Group, the Hospitality Guild and People 1st. The Pub & Bar Careers Programme has been built by industry leaders and experts like Anthony, to create quality training and work experience placements that directly results in ambitious young people actually getting the jobs they’ve been hoping for.

Anthony said, “The aim of the pre-employment programme and two-week placement is to educate candidates by teaching them the core skills that will prepare them for their careers and the tasks that pubs and bars will throw at them.”

The Pub & Bar Careers Programme is not only beneficial for the candidates but also for pub operators and the industry as a whole. Anthony continued,  “Often within the hospitality sector you experience a high turnover of staff. The Pub & Bar Careers Programme helps limit this issue by allowing time for candidates to experience the role and understand what is required of them.”

Mission accomplished– the programme allows participants to experience the job, experience the industry and pick up nationally recognised qualifications at the same time.

Anthony added: “At Yummy Pubs we now employ eight people who have come up through the scheme. I recommend the programme to pub operators for recruitment purposes; you can expand your business and help your community at the same time. We have found candidates with ability and passion, what more could you want!”
