“Key life skills are picked up in a bar”, says Pender

Our very own Vice Chairman, Anthony Pender has been speaking to Elliotts Agency Managing Director, James Hacon about his new role as Chairman of the BII and how he aims to raise the standards of training and support for those in the licensed retail industry.

Anthony has said before that we “need more talented people” in the hospitality industry and in the podcast he talks again of wanting to show young individuals coming out of college/university or who are out of work, that there is great career progression in this sector: “you may come in on low pay on a part time job, but if you prove yourself the progression and the meritocracy within our trade is phenomenal” and what better example is there, than Anthony himself!

He also notes that key life skills for any job can be picked up in a bar:”being sociable, dealing with conflict, multitasking, time management…not only are we creating skills for our own trade but we are creating life skills for the wider economy and job market,” says Anthony.
